GYLON BIO-LINE® / GYLON BIO-LINE® PLUS – Quality seals for pharmaceutical industry

GYLON BIO-LINE®
(Style 3504)

GYLON BIO-LINE® PLUS
(Style 3522)

Pharmaceutical and food processing industries strive to limit and avoid operational down time, caused due to cleaning and maintenance procedures. Sterilization cycles are carried out in the shortest possible time with highly concentrated chemicals, high temperatures and increased flow rates. Exposed to these conditions elastomeric seals failure due to exceeding their limits, thus resulting in short exchange intervals. GYLON BIO-LINE® and GYLON BIO-LINE® PLUS offer approved sealing materials for high temperatures and demanding processes – while at the same time entirely compliant to all major pharma regulations.

Key Benefits

  • High dimensional stability
  • Stopped cold flow
  • No intrusion/recession
  • No gap extrusion
  • Excellent chemical resistance**
  • Masters all CIP- and SIP-cleaning processes
  • Excellent cleanability of gasket
  • Wide temperature range
  • High pressure & vaccum duties

PS-SEAL® – many different lip materials and configurations.

PS-SEAL® Standard

PS-SEAL® Non-Standard

The PS-SEAL® product line stands for reliable sealing of rotating shafts at high circumferential speed, high pressure and extreme temperatures. Abrasive media is sealed as good as aggressive media. Usual radial shaft seals are only partially or even not usable at all under these conditions, as their seal lips are made of elastomeric materials.

PS-SEAL®s are usable in many different applications and can also be an alternative to mechanical seals and braided packings. The product line PS-SEAL® offers cost-effective and practical solutions to a wide range of applications. The portfolio of Garlock shaft seals offers standardized as well as special customized seals.

The high performance seals PS-SEAL® work with a sealing lip made of GYLON® or other modified PTFEs. Garlock produces GYLON® in a process that has been specially developed.

ADVANTAGES at a glance

  • Useable under high pressure and in extreme vacuum
  • Very suitable for high circumferential speed
  • Temperature resistant from -90 °C up to +260 °C
  • Excellent chemical resistance
  • Useable in food and pharma applications (FDA)
  • EN 1935/2004 certificate
  • SIP/CIP compatible
  • Good dry running capability
  • Wear resistant and low friction

PS-SEAL® Non-Standard – different lip materials

The Garlock PS-SEAL® Standard with a GYLON® Black lip and the static seal made of FKM has long been known in industry as a proven sealing element in critical sealing situations.

But what is the solution at temperatures above 200°C, which FKM cannot withstand? Or in an application with dry running? Or in case of food conformity requirements according to FDA or EC regulation 1935/2004? Or in use as a seal against abrasive substances? Or or or….

The ideal solution for these cases: The Garlock PS-SEAL® Non-Standard, which can be flexibly adapted to the critical application parameters. With the Garlock PS-SEAL® Non-Standard, for example, the GYLON® lip materials can be varied accordingly to meet demanding requirements for circumferential speed and pressure stability. And this is possible in both wet and dry running.

Conveniently, the different GYLON® lip materials are already visually recognizable due to the lip color.

GYLON® Black

An excellent PTFE/graphite based material suitable for lubricated applications. Not made for dry running and not suitable for food & pharma applications.

GYLON® White

Due to the white color a popular material in the food & pharmaceutical industries (with important certificates EC 1935, USP Class VI, FDA etc.), but also in the production of paints. The lip basis is a PTFE with barium sulfate, giving excellent gas tightness. The suitability for dry running is good, but the circumferential speed should be low, because the friction temperature can rise quickly.

GYLON® Blue

Garlock’s top solution in the food & pharmaceutical sectors having important certificates EC 1935; USP Class VI; FDA etc. Also ideal for larger shaft deflections on mixers and agitators. Excellent in dry running and with good gas tightness. However, abrasive media may cause problems for the PTFE/microspheres material.

GYLON® Brown-White

A cleverly combined PTFE material for abrasive applications in the food industry. The brown side of the lip contains abrasive-resistant additives, the white side heat-dissipating additives. This gives longer running hours with less down-time, and improves the operating process. Of course with FDA and EC 1935 conformity.

Material F Beige

Not a GYLON®, but a precisely designed material based on PTFE Ekonol. Specially designed for dry running, it shows its strengths there. High speeds can be run with low frictional heat. It is well suited for CIP and SIP processes in the food industry. Its excellent gas tightness in vacuum applications is also highly appreciated. However, in order to benefit from its advantages, it requires precise shaft concentricity.

Material MS Grey

A material developed with the hardest glass that scores excellently with abrasive media even without a GYLON® matrix. Optimal for dry running in the environment of abrasive powders and dusts. It also offers high pressure resistance with low wear. It is often combined in tandem with the other lip materials to increase its performance with low-viscosity media or gases.

PS-SEAL® Non-Standard – different lip configurations

The Garlock PS-SEAL® Standard is a PTFE-based high-performance seal that meets a wide range of requirements in practical use.

In some applications, however, the successful PS-SEAL® Standard proved not to be completely suitable. That’s why a team of Garlock experts developed additional designs: The PS-SEAL® Non-Standard.

With the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard, a range of variants is available. The variants are for application areas that require special configurations, since lip material and lip layout can be varied as desired.

The Garlock PS-SEAL® Non-Standard is known for reliable sealing of rotating shafts at high circumferential speeds, high pressures, and extreme temperatures from -90° to +260°C. The wide range of lip materials and layouts means the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard gives excellent sealing in difficult applications. The PS-SEAL® Non-Standard can handle PxV (Pressure x Velocity) of 45 bar.m/s for lubricated applications and 15 bar.m/s for dry running.

Furthermore, with the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard, Garlock offers a solution that fits into the small installation spaces of conventional shaft seals. Should none of the possible special configurations of PS-SEAL® Non-Standard prove to be suitable, the PS-SEAL® Special is available, with which almost all desired requirements can be achieved.

Be it several lips in a row, lips for media separation or a design with back to back lips – the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard offers a wide range of configuration options. In particular, the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard design with reverse lip is frequently used, and highly valued, in the food and pharmaceutical sectors.

Reverse lip

A single lip points out of the housing towards the media.

The success of this design is astounding:

The dead space is reduced by almost 80%, which has an extremely positive effect on cleaning and significantly reduces possible contamination. A clear plus in daily use.

Back to back

Two lips seal equally on both sides.

Safe separation of two media is also possible – and this with only one seal. Where two shaft seals would otherwise have to be used back to back, this task is accomplished by a PS-SEAL® Non-Standard in back-to-back design – and with only the smallest installation width.

Single lip with dust lip

The seal lip sits in the housing as standard, and is supplemented by a dust lip facing towards the dry side.

If the working environment is contaminated with dust, the PS-SEAL® Non-Standard can also be equipped with a dust lip. Here, the suitability of the PS-SEAL® lips for dry running is particularly exploited, thus increasing the performance of the seal.

Tandem

Two seal lips towards the media.

If longer service life is required or if even greater plant safety is desired, a PS-SEAL® Non-Standard Tandem is a good choice. With the smallest installation width, two seal lips are now available instead of just one.
