SEALING SOLUTIONS FOR CHEMICAL APPLICATIONS
Knowledge, Challenges and Solutions

How to meet the challenges of sealing chemical applications and comply with the amended TA Luft.
Environmental and climate protection in conjunction with safety and sustainability are top priorities at Garlock. Not only should our sealing solutions meet the high demands that science and legislation place on us and our products, we also see it as our duty to do the corresponding educational work and offer our know-how to our customers. …

Increased plant availability through improved load retention of seals in chemical applications.
Different surface pressures for different gaskets pose a problem when mounting seals. Mounting the seals with the correct bolt force causes difficulties for many users. And there are more challenges in the chemical industry that require solutions. …

Challenge
The customer’s application has a flange joint at the inlet/outlet of a plate and at the frame heat exchanger. One flange is glass lined and the other is coated with PTFE.
Solution
Usage of GYLON EPIX® on the given exchanger. No imprints of the EPIX structure are shown on either of the glass lined and ptfe lined flanges.

Challenge
The customer had been using a silica filled PTFE, 2mm thick sheet gasket material. However, old and uneven flanges created leakage issues that the plant wanted to eliminate.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3501-E was installed. All installations are sealing well and new installations are continually added.

Challenge
Due to the dangerous media being transported through the flanges there is a high risk of incidents and human harm, making it necessary for the gaskets to only be used once.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3504 PTFE gasket is specifically designed for use in applications where many acids and caustics are present.

Challenge
Extremely corrosive and toxic media, sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, are being handled. In addition, several of the non-metallic (FRP) flanges were misaligned.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3504 showed absolutely no sign of any chemical attack or leakage during the evaluation period.

Challenge
Using glass filled PTFE. The flange surfaces were being filled with epoxy when maintenance assessed the surfaces condition to be undesirable.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3504. Installation of 8” ring gaskets was complete without special handling using the plant’s standard practices.

Challenge
Customer’s need to consolidate to the fewest number of gaskets that would be good in chloralkali process media, metal lap joint flanges and FRP flanges. The customer also desired a gasket that would come in sheet form.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3510 was selected for its ability to seal the customer’s flange types and compatibility with the range of chemical media found in chloralkali processes.

Challenge
Ideally the customer desired one gasket to be used in all applications which included monomers, strong caustics and acids.
Solution
GYLON EPIX® Style 3510 has helped to decrease the number of gaskets needed to seal the range of service conditions.

Material
GYLON® offers a good possibility to use the advantages of PTFE, but due to its production process to eliminate the typical disadvantages – and even to improve the material. GYLON® is a modified and restructured PTFE.

Our solutions meet these requirements
In order to meet the requirements of special applications, we have subjected our materials and our GYLON® to special tests. These tests provide the basis for certification.

Patented hexagonal profile
The GYLON EPIX® hexagonal profile provides improved compressibility and recovery. The profiled surface reduces the contact area during initial compression to concentrate the compressive force and to generate high-density-zones within the material, for improved sealability.

Our Services
Our experts are application engineers as well as sales engineers. All are highly trained and can discuss and debate the requirements of your applications with you professionally and expertly and advise you on the way to the best fitting sealing solution.
